1080P to 4K: Is it Worth the Upgrade?

Our clients often ask us about upgrading from 1080p (standard high-resolution screens) to a 4K display, and whether or not the switch is worth the costs of the screen and installation. A few years ago, our answer would have probably been no – but with the trending increase that we’re seeing in 4K content from providers like Direct TV, Apple, and more, that answer is changing.

4K Televisions equip viewers with the best screen resolutions that are commercially available. While the price point may be a little higher, it provides superior image quality, color, and precision. There are even some very acceptable 4K television options that cost less than $1,000. Although you won’t be getting the top of the line product at that price, the television will still come with smart TV features like Google Cast. You will notice a significant difference when viewing your favorite television shows or watching sporting events with friends.

Many video streaming services and cable providers offer 4K adaptable channels. For instance, Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube all have 4K content available for their viewers. Providers such as Direct TV offer three full-time programmed 4K channels around the clock. Game consoles like Sony, Xbox, PS4, and Xbox One S are all capable of 4K resolutions. This trend is not likely to stop here – more and more of the content that is provided to viewers will be displayed at a higher resolution. While it may be more expensive than 1080p, it is likely a worthwhile investment in the long run, because most companies are beginning to commit to 4K. As the conversion to 4K continues, you will have a front row seat to enjoy the high-resolution content.

Sales of 4K televisions continue to increase as more brands become available and consumer demand grows. There was a 40% increase in sales from 2015 to 2016, causing 4K TVs to be one of the industry’s fastest-growing segments, according to i4u.com. As seen in the chart below, 4K television demand is predicted to increase significantly over the next few years, leaving 1080p televisions a relic of the past, alongside previous “top of the line” technologies.
